Newborn photography: how I work

teddy Newborn photographer London Surbiton-61

Photographing a baby’s early days is a real privilege for me and an enjoyable, memorable event for the family. I make sure your session is easy and relaxed for both you and your baby.

Newborns are adorable as they are which is why I take natural photographs in your everyday home surroundings, rather than tucking your baby into buckets!

Our session will result in gorgeous portraits of your newborn baby as he or she sleeps, gazes up at you or snuggles up in your arms.

“The photos are all really stunning, we are really happy with them. This photo session was perfect for a newborn baby! Being at our home it was easy for our family and Louise was very friendly, great with the baby and put us all at ease. The photos were so natural and caught our baby’s personality beautifully.” Sarah

Your family

As well as your precious newborn, I’ll take some relaxed portraits of the whole family together, and photographs of each parent holding and cuddling your baby.

If you have other children, I’ll photograph them with the newborn too – plus take some individual photographs of your older children as well. Here’s some info about how I keep siblings engaged on a newborn portrait session.

While your newborn is having a break, we can also photograph mum and dad together.

Your baby sets the pace

I’m a mum myself so I know all about taking my cue from the newborn. Always keeping things quiet and calm, I’ll work at your baby’s pace, allowing plenty of time for stops. They’ll likely have a couple of feeds during the session, and at the very least one nappy change. You can choose a start time that suits your family’s emerging routine best – I’m very flexible but most families find 10am works well with newborns, and the light is best in the mornings too.

Scheduling your newborn portrait session

I recommend scheduling your newborn portrait session for when your baby is 7-10 days old, or waiting for their six week milestone when they’ll be more settled and alert. You can read more on this here: www.louiserosephotography.com/scheduling-newborn-portrait-session

Here’s an outline of why I suggest the 7-10 day window:

Older than 10 days already?

Don’t worry! Here’s some info on how we’ll schedule your newborn session if your baby’s already older than 10 days, and you’d prefer not to wait for their six week milestone: www.louiserosephotography.com/photographing-newborn-thats-older-10-days-old

How long is a newborn portrait session?

Choose between a two hour or 3-4 hour portrait session. I recommend considering the 3-4 hour option if you have multiples; if your baby isn’t the most settled and you’d like to take your time a little more; if you’d like to also go outdoors to your favourite park; or if you have extended family that you’d like to incorporate too.

“The photos are everything I hoped they would be and more – there are so many beautiful pictures. Louise has managed to capture us all extremely naturally which was exactly what I had hoped for. I will always treasure these photos of those special early days. I was impressed with Louise’s sense of calm – she clearly has a natural ability to engage with children. Thank you Louise!” Nell
