A lot of parents want outdoor photographs with their newborn baby. Sadly, a lot of photographers aren’t up for that! Don’t worry, I love the outdoors too and I’m more than happy to venture outside with your new bundle.
With extended sessions (3-4 hours), we can take the key shots indoors and then head out for an hour or so to your favourite park.
Even with 2 hour sessions, if your baby is calm and settled and everything runs smoothly (no promises, but it does happen!) there is sometimes time to go out into your garden too for your outdoor photographs.
Getting some photos outside was really important to me, and it felt really calm having newborn photos taken at home.
We booked a newborn session primarily to get some photos of the three of us, reflecting how we’ve spent our time in the first few weeks – most of the photos we had were of just Rowan, or of only one of us with him. So much gets forgotten about the newborn bubble so we wanted to make sure to capture some memories.
Louise did such an amazing job getting us into a relaxed mood and capturing really precious moments. I love looking back over the photos, especially now Rowan is already so much bigger. I think we will be looking back over the photos a lot as he grows up.

Things to bear in mind with outdoor newborn photography
Temperature:
Babies get cold easily, so we’ll take blankets to keep them cosy.
In Winter, do have a think about whether you have a snowsuit that you’d be happy to have in the shots. It will likely feature quite heavily!
Feel free to put an extra layer on under your baby’s outfit.
If it’s a hot day, your baby may get hot in your arms so we’ll also take some time to let them cool off between snuggles.
Sleep:
Lots of babies will sleep being walked around outside, so photos outdoors are likely to be of a sleepy baby.
Lighting:
Outdoor lighting isn’t as good for the classic close-up portraits of newborns, so I’ll take most of those at home where the light is more controlled.
Safety:
It’s not a good idea to lie your baby on a blanket without an adult close by. Curious dogs can appear out of nowhere! So your baby will be in your arms for all the outdoor shots.
